Inflation Data Moves Into Focus in Europe

Asian markets were a mixed bunch Tuesday, though optimism surrounding the Anthropic IPO filing powered the tech sector. The South Korean Kospi finished 3.1% higher after the Korea Exchange activated a buy-side sidecar on the Kospi, temporarily halting program trading. China’s Shanghai fell 1.3%, despite the region’s industrial profits rising 14.4% in September from a year earlier and at their strongest pace since June. Elsewhere, Japan’s Nikkei gained 1.7%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng shed 0.7%.

European bourses are trading mostly higher, as traders digest a hotter-than-expected inflation report. In-store inflation rose 2.9% year over year between Oct. 1 and Oct. 7, to its highest reading in over two years. Also, Europe’s HSBC reported third-quarter pretax profit that fell in line with estimates and announced a share buyback of up to $1 billion by the end of 2026, though job cuts are being considered. At last glance, London’s FTSE has shed 0.8%, while France’s CAC is 0.4% higher, and Germany’s DAX is up 0.3%.
