Lilly's Retatrutide Drives Significant Weight Loss And A1C Improvement In Phase 3 Diabetes Study

· Nasdaq Market Structure

(RTTNews) - Eli Lilly and Company (LLY) announced detailed results from the Phase 3 TRIUMPH-2 study showing that retatrutide delivered substantial weight loss and blood sugar improvements in adults living with obesity or overweight and type 2 diabetes.

Obesity and type 2 diabetes frequently occur together, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease and other health complications. While several therapies can address one or both conditions, many patients continue to seek treatments that provide meaningful improvements in both weight and blood sugar control.

TRIUMPH-2 evaluated retatrutide, an investigational, first-in-class GIP, GLP-1, and glucagon triple hormone receptor agonist, in adults with type 2 diabetes and obesity or overweight. The Phase 3 study assessed once-weekly doses of 4 mg, 9 mg, and 12 mg over 80 weeks.

According to the company, participants receiving retatrutide 4 mg, 9 mg, and 12 mg lost an average of 29.8 pounds (12.7%), 45.4 pounds (19.1%), and 49.6 pounds (20.8%), respectively. Among participants with a baseline BMI of 35 or higher, those receiving the 12 mg dose lost an average of 60.8 pounds (23.4%) of their body weight.

The company also reported improvements in blood sugar control. Participants receiving retatrutide 9 mg and 12 mg achieved average A1C reductions of 1.6% and 1.5%, respectively, while those receiving 4 mg achieved an average reduction of 1.4%. Up to 40% of participants reached an A1C below 5.7%, a level considered within the normal range.

By the end of the study, 59.5% of participants receiving retatrutide 12 mg no longer met the BMI criteria for obesity. Retatrutide is designed to activate three hormone receptors involved in metabolism, appetite regulation, and energy expenditure. Lilly believes this multi-target approach may help address both obesity and type 2 diabetes with a single therapy.

The TRIUMPH-2 findings were presented at the 62nd Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) in Milan, Italy, and simultaneously published in The Lancet.

LLY has traded between $763.30 and $1,292.65 over the past year. The stock closed Tuesday's trading at $1,184.63, down 0.01%. In overnight trading, the stock is at $1,185.47, up 0.07%.
